CelluClay 3D Cakes

CelluClay 3D Cakes

The process:

Some students drew a plan of what they want to make, others drew a 3D drawing of their finished cake slice.

We found that the cereal boxes need to be completely covered in masking tape or it would get soggy and lose its strength.

Also do not cover the entire thing because if the bottom is covered the moisture gets trapped and it won't dry well. OR only do a little at a time and very thin layers.

If the CelluClay is too thick it does not dry well!

I had to collect many containers to store the acrylic paint as you can see we eat a lot of cream cheese!

I bought many different types of air dry clay to make the decorations. We also used icing piping bags and tips. Some bags were not good and would rip or explode.

Dollar General for the win! I tried 4 different air dry clay companies and although the more claylike type is nice for some things this type was the most liked by my students.

CelluClay Bowls

 CelluClay Bowls

This material was somewhat challenging to create these small nesting bowls. We used small glass bowls with saran wrap to mold them. If they were too thick they did not dry well and had a weird mushy consistency. Also some of them got stuck to the paper plates. If they were too thin they would crack. So finding a perfect thickness was the goal! Some of my students (I teach 9th-12th grade) were able to create beautiful bowls. We painted them with acrylic paint and then sprayed them with a protective coat. They weigh nearly nothing since they are made of paper pulp, but are surprisingly strong.
